It is used to shorten the time of vulcanization or as an accelerator for speciality rubbers like neoprene and poly sulfide. As a reinforcing pigment in rubber it has the advantage of low heat generation, good heat conductivity, reinforcement at elevated temperatures and resistance to aging by ultraviolet light. The inherent qualities of low water absorption, high resistivity, low power factor and medium dielectric constant in it make it suitable for preparing rubber insulated cables. Zinc Oxide is also used in pressure sensitive adhesive and mechanical tapes. Special grade of Zinc Oxide is used surgical tapes. Generally it is employed at levels of three to five parts by weight per hundred parts of rubber.
